Daphne Boxill

Daphne Without Apollo 3, 2021

Daphne Boxill investigates her relationship with solitude and the emotions that arise through her self-portraiture. Being alone has allowed her to cultivate self-awareness, a feeling of safety and also provided a space for her to be her most authentic self: vulnerable, reflective, curious, but also joyful and empowered. Her inspiration comes from many places including nature, poetry and mythology. Boxill works and lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Artist’s Statement

In early 2021, Boxill began taking self-portraits on Ward’s Island and felt soothed by the natural surroundings. She began thinking of Daphne and Apollo, the myth behind her given name. Inspired by the feminist interpretation of the dryad (a nymph or nature spirit who lives in trees and takes the form of a beautiful young woman), Boxill focuses on Daphne before Apollo pursued her. Through her series, Daphne Without Apollo, Boxill pays homage to Daphne’s independence and the joy she derived from the natural world.
