Glacial Erratics – Georgian Bay 1, 2021

Fred Lum is a photojournalist in Toronto. His assignments have sent him to the Olympics, and to breaking news events internationally, as well across Canada. Aside from iPhone use for social media and working out story ideas, almost all of Lum’s personal, non-assignment work is darkroom based gelatin silver fiber prints, photographed with black and white film using cameras ranging from 35mm up to 7x17. This medium offers a needed break from the quick turn around of digital work flow, and challenges him to work and see differently. When he works in colour and in low light, he does use digital cameras.

Artist Statement

Fred Lum has a deep interest in the natural world and environment. In Glacial Erratics – Georgian Bay, he explores the remnants of what is left behind when glaciers retreated after the Pleistocene Epoch. This epoch began about 2.6 million years ago, and ended about 11,700 years ago. Glacial erratics (large or small rocks or boulders) and their varied forms drew him to photograph them in situ with an ultra large format camera and 7x17 inch film. The erratics leaves one to ponder how far they moved while under ice, often two kms thick. Could this happen again?
