Artist Statement

Monica Gupta has worked with people experiencing homelessness for over twenty years in Toronto. Her series People in Parks depicted several people who live in the shelter system. Many people find photographing people who are suffering and alone on the street very controversial. However, Gupta finds it very rewarding to acknowledge the people who we pass by on the sidewalks and parks. Most are genuinely happy to have someone who will listen to them. The series Where Do You Want Me to Go? portrays people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic. When shelters are full and housing is non-existent, where should people go?
